In 1891 George Fairchild married Josephine Mills Sherman, the daughter of William Sherman, a prosperous Davenport, Iowa farmer. She had just been willed a considerable sum by an uncle who had been one of the original '49rs and this gave the young publisher access to capital he soon put to use.
